Taliban Minister Khalil Haqqani Killed in Kabul Suicide Bombing
Khalil Haqqani, a high-ranking Taliban official and brother-in-law of a prominent guerrilla leader, has been killed in a suicide bombing outside his office in Kabul.
The blast occurred as Haqqani was leaving his office, killing six others. The Islamic State group (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack, with an IS militant detonating explosives as Haqqani walked out.
Haqqani’s brother Jalaluddin was a prominent figure in Afghan history, fighting Soviet troops in the 1980s and founding the Haqqani network, which carried out attacks during the Taliban’s 20-year insurgency. His son Sirajuddin Haqqani currently serves as Afghanistan’s interior minister.
Despite improved security since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Afghanistan still experiences frequent bombings and suicide attacks, often claimed by ISKP, a regional affiliate of the Islamic State group and rival of the Taliban.
