Taliban to Shower Kabul with Flowers for Anniversary Celebration

The Taliban plan to celebrate the fourth anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan by showering the capital city, Kabul, with flowers from helicopters. According to an official note, Defense Ministry helicopters will perform “beautiful aerial displays” above Kabul on Friday, covering the city with colorful flowers.

The festivities also include sports performances by Afghan athletes and will take place from the afternoon until early evening. However, concerns remain about Afghanistan’s struggles, including a massive influx of refugees, economic issues, and cuts in foreign funding.

Residents are divided on what they hope to achieve from these celebrations. Some, like Ahsan Ullah Khan, encourage Afghans abroad to return and see the peaceful country for themselves. Others, such as Zafar Momand, emphasize the need for more than just peace – employment opportunities, education, and equal rights for women.

It’s unclear if female attendees will be allowed at Friday’s events, given the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s access to education and public spaces. Last year’s anniversary celebrations were held at Bagram Airfield and excluded women, including journalists from major news agencies.
