Tanzania’s opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been charged with treason just a day after his arrest. The charge is linked to his nationwide campaign pushing for electoral reform under the slogan “No Reforms, No Election.” Lissu plans to challenge President Samia Suluhu Hassan in October’s polls.
Lissu’s calls for electoral reform have been met with criticism and force from authorities. Police used tear gas to disperse Chadema supporters while blocking press conferences about Lissu’s arrest. Rights groups have condemned the use of force, accusing the government of silencing critics through state institutions.
The arrest is not Lissu’s first. He survived an assassination attempt in 2017 and ran against Magufuli in 2020 before leaving after complaining of irregularities. His case has been adjourned until April 24.
