Target Faces Backlash Over Rollback of DEI Initiatives

Activists are calling for a nationwide boycott of Target stores after the company rolled back its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. The decision, made public on January 24, comes as Black History Month approaches.

Target had previously set goals to increase Black employees’ representation and advancement, improve Black shoppers’ experiences, and promote Black-owned businesses. However, the company announced it would be pulling back on these efforts, including hiring and promoting women, minorities, LGBTQ+ people, and veterans.

Civil rights attorney Nekima Levy Armstrong expressed disappointment in Target’s decision, stating that “Target has shown its true face by deciding to roll back its focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.” Activists are urging Minnesotans to boycott the stores starting February 1.

Black business owners like Tabitha Brown have been impacted by Target’s previous DEI initiatives. While they understand the anger, Brown asked shoppers to reconsider boycotting, citing concerns about the impact on her business.

Target claimed that its decision was made to “drive our business” and create a sense of belonging for team members and guests. However, the company’s actions have sparked questions about its philanthropic commitments and partnerships with organizations like Twin Cities Pride, which previously partnered with Target but is now distancing itself due to the rollback.

The backlash highlights the importance of companies prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in their business practices and community engagement.
