A nationwide boycott is planned against several major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Nestle, and Target. The boycotts, which started with a 24-hour economic spending blackout on Friday, aim to protest diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
The movement, led by activists who support DEI initiatives, encourages consumers to stop shopping at these companies indefinitely until they change their policies. The target of multiple boycotts is Target, which recently phased out its DEI initiatives after receiving criticism from Minnesota civil rights activists.
Other businesses being targeted include Amazon, Walmart, Nestle, General Mills, McDonald’s, and a second economic blackout aimed at online retailer Amazon starting on March 7. The #LatinoFreeze movement also encourages Latinos to freeze spending in response to freezes on DEI policies, funding for the National Institutes of Health, and actions on immigration.
The boycotts are part of a broader effort to show that “we the people are the system” and to pressure companies to adopt more inclusive practices. The activists behind the boycotts plan to continue their efforts with multiple spending blackouts throughout the year, targeting various businesses and industries.
