Target will shut down all 1,978 of its stores for a full 24 hours starting with the upcoming spring holiday. The retailer confirmed this via email, stating that guests can expect regular store hours on April 19 and checking Target.com or the Target app for local store information.
In contrast, Walmart will remain open to cater to customers in need of urgent groceries during Easter. The Christian holiday falls between March 22 and April 25, calculated based on the lunar calendar, with this year’s celebration taking place on Sunday, April 20.
Other retailers such as Sam’s Club, Publix, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s, H-E-B, Michaels, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and Marshalls have also confirmed their closures. However, Walmart stores remained open last year, making it likely they will do so again in 2025.
Industry experts predict around 15,000 store closures by 2025, nearly double the number of last year. The CEO of Turnaround Management Association, Scott Y. Stuart, attributed this trend to post-pandemic factors affecting retail, including online marketplaces, work-from-home arrangements, and changes in consumer habits.
