Tariffs Divide Americans by Party Lines

A recent survey from Ipsos reveals a stark divide in Americans’ opinions on the impact of tariffs. While most believe tariffs will increase prices, Democrats are more likely to say they’re stocking up on items that may cost more under new taxes.

According to the Ipsos Consumer Tracker, 86% of Democrats believe tariffs will lead to higher prices on food, electronics, and other goods. In contrast, only 46% of Republicans share this concern. The survey also found that 39% of Democrats are stocking up on items they think may cost more under tariffs, compared to 19% of Republicans.

The divide is not limited to opinions on tariffs. A significant number of Americans remain unaware of how tariffs work. Half of Republicans support tariffs on rivals like China, but not on allies like Canada, highlighting the party’s internal divisions on the issue.

The survey also touches on other topics, including the impact of the holidays on consumers’ emotions and the resolution for 2025. However, the tariff debate remains a pressing concern, with Democrats more likely to express concerns about its economic effects.
