A taxi driver of Pakistani origin was praised by Mannheim’s mayor, Christian Specht, for his bravery in blocking a vehicle that deliberately crashed into people, killing at least two. The suspect, a 40-year-old German citizen from Rhineland-Palatinate state, had attempted to flee the scene but was arrested shortly after trying to kill himself.
The suspect, who suffers from psychological problems, is being investigated for multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. Authorities have seized items from the suspect’s vehicle and home for forensic analysis.
The attack, which occurred in the southwestern German city, has no reported political motive. Many people left flowers at the scene to honor the victims. The taxi driver, who has lived in Germany for 15 years, reportedly acted courageously as a Muslim and as a citizen, according to Specht.
