Taylor Sheridan’s Supporting Character Syndrome in Yellowstone

Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator and showrunner of Yellowstone, has been playing a surprisingly prominent role in the final season of the drama series. As Travis Wheatley, the horseman and trainer, Sheridan showcases his versatility as an actor, writer, and producer.

In recent episodes, Travis hosts strip poker games with attractive young women, including his girlfriend Bella Hadid, who plays a role that reflects real-life experiences of the supermodel. The character’s interactions with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) are also noteworthy, particularly in a rodeo arena scene where Beth is impressed by Travis’ horse-riding skills.

These scenes highlight Sheridan’s “Supporting Character Syndrome,” where he elevates his own character into a central figure in the show. This strategy has been compared to Shonda Rhimes casting herself in Grey’s Anatomy as a leading surgeon, which would be jarringly meta.

The final episodes of Yellowstone will air next Sunday on Paramount Network and CBS, with reports suggesting that they may set up a spinoff series featuring some of the main cast members, including Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.
