Google and OpenAI are pushing to abandon long-established copyright law in favor of stealing content from human journalists to build their own AI capabilities. The companies claim this is necessary for national security, but news organizations, including The Denver Post and The New York Times, have already sued them over similar actions.
OpenAI argues that “scaling human ingenuity” and “freedom of learning and knowledge” justify vacuuming up millions of newspaper articles without permission or payment. However, critics point out the irony in using copyright law to protect AI innovation while disregarding human creators’ rights.
The US has long protected its artists, authors, and journalists by respecting their right to own work created with capital invested and hard labor performed. This approach has allowed news organizations to thrive and hold governments accountable.
If the government fails to reject these proposals, it would set a chilling precedent for all creative content creators. The US should prioritize protecting the rights of owners who have worked tirelessly to build the foundations of knowledge that AI can now tap into.
