Tech Giants Pledge to Boost Nuclear Energy Capacity by 2050

Amazon, Google, and other major companies such as Occidental and IHI Corp have signed a pledge to support the goal of tripling the world’s nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The World Nuclear Association facilitated this pledge, which is part of an international effort that already has over 30 countries committed to achieving the same target.

Nuclear energy is a clean source of power, generating 9% of the world’s electricity from 439 reactors. It is also seen as a solution for data centers, with tech firms like Amazon and Google investing heavily in nuclear energy projects.

Despite demand, uranium supply remains constrained due to global production being concentrated in Kazakhstan, Canada, and Australia. The world currently operates around 411 nuclear power reactors with a combined capacity of 371 gigawatts.

These companies aim to increase nuclear energy capacity through small modular reactor projects. Their commitment comes as prices of uranium oxide hit their highest levels in over 16 years due to supply uncertainty and higher demand.
