A group of prominent tech CEOs, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists have signed an open letter urging governments, technology companies, and civil society groups to create public data sets and incentives for developing “small” AI models.
The letter highlights the importance of creating high-value data sets that are publicly accessible in privacy-preserving ways, enabling breakthroughs in life-threatening diseases such as cancer while fostering innovation among start-ups.
Signatories include LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman, Instacart CEO Fidji Simo, and Hugging Face cofounder Clement Delangue. The group calls for the development of smaller, open AI models that cater to people’s needs and are more environmentally friendly. They also advocate for further research into AI’s societal impacts.
The letter emphasizes the need for society to be in charge of AI development, ensuring it serves humanity. The French government has dubbed this initiative the AI Action Summit, a successor to previous meetings on AI governance focused primarily on mitigating existential risks and catastrophic harms.
