A 15-year-old girl from Lesotho was admitted to hospital with severe abdominal pain, later diagnosed as labour pains due to pregnancy. The girl suffers from vaginal atresia, a rare defect that affects 4,000-10,000 newborn girls, making it impossible for her to get pregnant through normal means.
Doctors performed a C-section to deliver the baby, a healthy 6.2lb boy. To understand how the girl became pregnant, doctors analyzed her medical history and discovered she had attended hospital nine months prior with a stab wound to her stomach region after giving oral sex. Sperm is usually killed by stomach acid, but in this case, its survival was attributed to the absence of food in her stomach at the time of the attack.
The lower acidity allowed sperm to travel through her stab wounds and reach her uterus, where it fertilised the egg. This unusual pregnancy highlights the complexities of human reproduction and the importance of thorough medical evaluation.
