Devin Bailey, a 15-year-old violinist from Natchez, Mississippi, recently performed at New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall as part of the Carnegie Honors Performance Series. The week-long program allowed him to practice with talented musicians and explore the city.
Bailey has been playing the violin since his eighth-grade year, when his mother enrolled him in a class instead of the school band due to overcrowding. His teacher, Monquez Ford, recognized Bailey’s exceptional talent early on, particularly his mastery of the vibrato technique. Bailey practiced diligently and was later praised by Ford for his natural ability.
Bailey’s Carnegie experience not only honed his musical skills but also provided opportunities for networking, sightseeing, and learning. He was joined by fellow performers from across the nation and had a chance to see iconic landmarks like Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Grand Central Station.
The trip was made possible through a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $11,000, with contributions pouring in after Bailey’s mother shared their story on social media. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to donors who supported Devin’s journey, thanking them for their kindness and generosity.
Despite being the only Black student in the group, Bailey formed lasting friendships with his fellow performers and has since focused on catching up on missed school work while sending thank-you notes to those who helped him achieve this incredible opportunity.
