A 17-year-old girl from Bribie Island in Queensland, Australia died after being bitten by a shark while swimming about 100 meters off the beach. Charlize Zmuda, a member of the local surf life saving club, was bitten on her arm and despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Woorim Beach, where the incident occurred, is an unpatrolled stretch of sand popular with off-road enthusiasts and campers. Drumlines were reportedly used in the area to attract sharks and reduce the risk of attacks. The Premier of Queensland expressed his condolences to Zmuda’s family and friends, calling the attack “devastating”.
