Teens Should Avoid Caffeine Altogether, New Guidelines Say

A new set of guidelines from Healthy Eating Research recommends that teenagers avoid caffeine altogether due to potential health risks. The guidance, created by a panel of experts from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and other reputable organizations, advises teens to stick to water and plain milk, limit 100% juice intake, and avoid sugary drinks containing artificial sweeteners.

Caffeine is a stimulant found in over 60 plants, including coffee beans, tea leaves, and kola nuts. It can cause sleep issues, high blood pressure, anxiety, headaches, restlessness, and dehydration. Synthetic forms of caffeine are also added to energy drinks, which can lead to serious health problems, including death.

The biggest sources of caffeine for kids include decaf coffee or tea, bottled iced tea, regular soda, black or green tea, coffee, energy shots, and energy drinks. Even seemingly harmless foods like chocolate bars, protein bars, and ice cream may contain caffeine.

The guidance emphasizes the importance of minimizing caffeine intake due to its potential side effects, particularly in younger bodies. Parents are advised not to panic if their child consumes a caffeinated product occasionally, but to limit it as much as possible.

Key recommendations:

* Avoid drinking beverages with any amount of caffeine
* Stick to water and plain milk
* Limit 100% juice intake
* Avoid sugary drinks containing artificial sweeteners
* Be cautious of energy drinks and other products containing synthetic caffeine

Parents should consult with their pediatrician for personalized advice on managing caffeine intake.
