Tennessee Baseball Rises with Freshman Manny Marin’s Promising Debut

Tennessee baseball took a promising step forward on Opening Day with a 15-0 win over Hofstra, thanks in part to freshman infielder Manny Marin’s impressive start at third base. The transfer from the Clas of 2024 has been making waves since his arrival, and Friday night’s performance was no exception.

Marin singled twice in three at-bats, showing poise beyond his years as he took advantage of opportunities. His bat was smooth, with discipline to lay off certain pitches and a notable lack of pressure. The moment wasn’t too big for him, and it will continue to be an opportunity to shine.

Coach Tony Vitello praised Marin’s performance, saying “he swung the bat really well and some of them aren’t even at-bats where he gets a hit.” The freshman has already shown impressive skills in preseason camp and fall workouts, checking in at multiple positions including third base, shortstop, second base, first base, and right field.

The surprise starter’s start was not unexpected, given his impressive bat and glove. With presumed starting third baseman Andrew Fischer facing injury limitations, Marin took on the opportunity to prove himself. The transfer’s energy was evident, as Vitello described him as “playing better than everybody since he came back.”

As for the future, Vitello will continue to experiment with different lineup combinations, potentially giving Marin more opportunities at the plate. But for now, the freshman has earned his place on Opening Day and is poised to make a significant impact for Tennessee baseball in the season ahead.
