Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets worldwide to show support for Palestinians in Gaza, demanding action from governments and international leaders.
In Australia, more than 40 protests took place across major cities and towns on Sunday, including Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Organisers estimated that over 300,000 people participated in the demonstrations, calling for sanctions against Israel and an end to arms trade with the country.
Protesters in cities nationwide chanted slogans such as “free, free Palestine” and “sanction Israel now”. Many carried Palestinian flags and called for tougher sanctions on Israel. Organisers said Australia’s plans to recognise Palestinian statehood must be accompanied by increased pressure on Israel.
The protests came after a recent famine declaration in Gaza City, where nearly two million people have been displaced due to Israeli attacks. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that over half a million people in Gaza face catastrophic levels of hunger, with many at risk of dying from malnutrition-related issues.
Protests were also held globally, including in Malaysia, Kenya, Belgium, and Senegal, as well as in the United Kingdom and Sweden. Demonstrators condemned Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza and called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the famine-struck enclave.
The protests followed a recent warning from the IPC that Israel’s actions could constitute genocide. At least 62,263 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the Israel-Palestine war on October 7, 2023. The International Criminal Court has also issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders over war crimes in Gaza.
