Tesla has successfully completed its first fully autonomous delivery of a Model Y car, marking a major milestone in the company’s Full Self-Driving technology. Elon Musk announced on Friday that the vehicle drove itself from the factory to its new owner’s home without any human intervention or remote control.
According to Ashok Elluswamy, a Tesla engineer, the car reached speeds of up to 72 miles per hour on a Texas highway. This achievement makes it one of the first passenger vehicles to drive itself on an interstate without a human operator.
While this milestone is significant, it’s not entirely new. Waymo autonomous cars were granted regulatory approval for testing on freeways in 2024, and self-driving freight trucks from Aurora have been operating on highways in Texas since May. However, Tesla’s accomplishment marks the first time a fully autonomous vehicle has driven on a public highway with no people in the car or remote operators.
Musk praised the achievement, saying it was “Zippy!” and marked the first fully autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from factory to customer home, including highways. The company’s Full Self-Driving technology has faced repeated delays, but this milestone demonstrates its progress toward full autonomy.
