Tesla CEO Elon Musk has criticized the removal of 64 Superchargers from the New Jersey Turnpike, calling it “corruption”. However, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority says the move is part of a new agreement with Applegreen to operate service areas and install universal EV chargers.
The plan allows all makes and models of electric vehicles (EVs) to charge at 21 service areas, rather than just eight where Tesla’s Superchargers were installed. The new chargers are expected to be operational in July at the Molly Pitcher Service Area and this fall at three other locations.
Tesla had a license agreement to provide Superchargers in these service areas, which has expired. Applegreen will manage the installation of the universal chargers, which work with all EVs. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority says it consented to the agreement because Applegreen was best positioned to roll out and manage the new chargers.
The move is part of a broader shift in the transportation industry towards more open-access electric charging infrastructure. As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow, companies are looking for ways to make charging infrastructure more accessible and user-friendly.
