A new analysis has revealed that the Tesla Cybertruck is 17 times more likely to result in fire fatalities than the infamous Ford Pinto. The comparison was made by independent automotive blog FuelArc, which found that at its current rate, the Cybertruck would have 14.52 fatalities per 100,000 units.
The study analyzed reported fire fatalities for both vehicles and compared their sales data. However, Tesla has not released its own safety testing data, making it difficult to determine the true risk associated with owning a Cybertruck.
FuelArc advises Cybertruck owners to familiarize themselves with the emergency door release mechanism and ensure their backseat passengers know how to operate it. The blog notes that these numbers are an estimate due to Tesla’s lack of transparency on sales data.
The Cybertruck has faced numerous safety concerns, including its self-driving software, crumple zones, battery fire risks, and the issue of the vehicles stopping suddenly in the middle of highways. European safety organizations are also considering banning the vehicle from their streets.
As civilians in North America continue to drive these vehicles, it remains unclear when Tesla will address the mounting safety concerns surrounding the Cybertruck.
