Tesla has joined a growing list of automakers, including BYD, SAIC, and Geely, in suing the European Union over tariffs on China-built electric vehicles. Tesla operates a Gigafactory Shanghai plant that produces both domestically and exported vehicles. The EU’s Commission imposed low tariffs on Chinese EVs, with Tesla being among those hit at just 8 percent, while other companies like SAIC faced higher rates, leading to public backlash. POLITICO reported this week that Tesla was included in the complaint against the EU. The EU claims Beijing supported China’s EV industry, giving it a stronger position than the U.S. and Canada, which imposed 100% tariffs on imported EVs. Trade spokesperson Olof Gill stated the EU is “ready” to take legal action. The suit aims to counter the EU’s anti-subsidy measures, with potential consequences including recovering lost revenue. Meanwhile, the China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Machinery and Electronics (CCCME) has also filed a separate lawsuit. For Tesla accessories, check out the Teslarati Marketplace.
