Tesla Leads European EV Sales with Model Y, Despite Model 3 Decline

European electric vehicle (EV) sales have shown a positive trend in June, with plugin vehicles reaching 361,000 units, up 23% year-over-year. This is a welcome sign for the EV market, which has faced challenges this year.

Tesla took the top spot with its Model Y, retaining its Best Seller status thanks to 24,073 registrations. The Model Y’s success can be attributed to its recent refresh, which has helped it regain popularity.

The Tesla Model 3 fell to second place, with 10,807 registrations. However, this decline is partly due to the brand’s focus on the refreshed Model Y and new versions of the model.

Skoda Elroq took third place with 9,825 registrations, showcasing its strong performance in the compact crossover segment. The Elroq’s success can be attributed to its competitive pricing and value-for-money proposition.

Other notable models include the Renault 5/Alpine A290, which scored 7,788 deliveries, and the BYD Seal U, which delivered a record 7,182 sales.

The plugin vehicle share of the overall European auto market grew to 29% in June, with full electrics accounting for 20%. The top five models accounted for 40% of total EV sales.

Looking ahead to the 2025 ranking, Tesla’s dominance is expected to be challenged by other models. The Skoda Elroq and Volkswagen ID.7/ID.3 could potentially surpass the Model 3 in the third spot.

The US-EU tariff agreement has had a limited impact on European EV sales, with the Model Y being made in Germany and the Model 3 being cheaper to produce in China. However, regulations in Europe differ from those in the US, making it essential to adapt products for local markets.
