Tesla Model Y & 3 Sedans Face Power Steering Failure Warnings

Tesla owners are facing another concern as more than 376,000 Model Y crossovers and Model 3 sedans may be affected by power steering failures due to excess voltage reaching the printed circuit board. So far, over 3,000 warranty claims have been reported, with 570 crashes attributed to the issue.

Federal investigators had opened a preliminary inquiry into the problem in 2023 after 12 reports of steering failures were received. However, it’s now clear that a software patch can fix the issue. The problem is caused by excess voltage on the printed circuit board controlling the electronic power steering, which can overstress components and cause failure.

Unlike other recalls, this one is unlikely to disable the driver of power steering while driving. The system is designed to keep power steering active until the car stops moving again. While a lack of power-assisted steering may not be catastrophic, it’s still a safety concern for a critical system like this.
