Tesla is facing production woes, quality control issues, and poor sales of its Cybertruck, widely considered one of the biggest automotive failures in recent history. To salvage the situation, the company has added a powerful incentive to its massive sales event: a free transfer of its $12,000 Full Self-Driving (FSD) software for new Cybertruck owners.
Existing Tesla owners who have already purchased FSD can now transfer it to their new Cybertruck for free, marking a significant concession. This move is a strategic gamble, targeting dedicated Tesla fans who might be interested in the unconventional truck. By offering this promotion, Tesla aims to attract the only group of people still interested in the Cybertruck: its loyal customer base.
The Cybertruck has been plagued by problems since its launch, including inconsistent panel gaps, software glitches, and high price point that hasn’t appealed to mainstream buyers. Industry analysts suggest deliveries have fallen short of initial projections, with just 4,306 units sold in the second quarter of 2025 – a 50.8% decline from last year.
By subsidizing the Cybertruck with its most profitable product, Tesla is taking a short-term approach to address long-term sales issues. Whether this will be enough to turn the tide for the beleaguered truck remains to be seen.
