Tesla has voluntarily recalled over 376,000 vehicles in the US due to issues with failing power-assisted steering systems. The recall affects certain Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured between February 28, 2023, and October 11, 2023.
The problem lies in printed circuit boards that can become overstressed, causing the power assist steering to fail when a vehicle comes to a stop and then accelerates. This can lead to drivers needing to exert more force to steer, increasing the risk of a collision.
Tesla claims it has found no crashes or injuries related to these failures and is offering an over-the-air software update as a fix. The recall follows an earlier probe in China concerning similar issues with the same systems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating safety defects in Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features, which require human drivers to be ready to steer or brake at any time. Musk’s team, led by CEO Elon Musk, has made significant cuts to the NHTSA workforce, potentially limiting the agency’s ability to investigate companies like Tesla.
