Tesla Recalls 46,000 Cybertrucks Due to Hazardous Exterior Panel

Tesla is issuing a recall for approximately 46,000 Cybertruck models sold since launch due to a hazardous exterior steel trim panel that can peel off while in motion. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the issue and requires Tesla to fix the problem at no cost to owners.

The problem lies with the “structural adhesive” holding the panel in place, which is susceptible to environmental embrittlement. To address this, Tesla will use a new structural adhesive not prone to environmental embrittlement and add a nut to clamp the steel panel to the vehicle structure.

This marks the eighth recall for the Cybertruck, following previous issues with loose parts requiring repairs or software updates. The NHTSA has stated that there are no reported crashes or injuries resulting from this issue, but owners may still face a hazard while driving.

The recall was prompted by a customer complaint received by Tesla on February 21. The company began an engineering study after the initial complaint and conducted inspections and pull tests before closing the study without finding any issues. It wasn’t until NHTSA reached out that Tesla delved deeper into social media posts and service records, leading to the recall on March 11.
