Tesla Recalls 46,100 Cybertruck Pickups Due to Glue Issue

Tesla has agreed to recall all 46,100 Cybertruck pickups due to a flaw in the adhesive used to secure exterior sheet metal. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that the bonding agent can become brittle and fail in cold weather conditions, posing an accident risk.

The issue was first reported by a customer who filed a complaint with NHTSA about a “cant rail” lining on the lateral side of the roof where metal panelling had come loose. Tesla investigated the claim and determined the best course of action was to initiate a recall.

As part of the recall, Tesla will replace the bonding agent used in the vehicle’s construction with a new adhesive that is less prone to environmental embrittlement. The remedy component uses a different structural adhesive, which will be installed on all vehicles produced after the fix begins.

Tesla halted all outbound deliveries of its electric pickup truck last week and expects vehicles in production to receive the remedy by March 21. All vehicles built prior to this date but not yet shipped to customers will also be retrofitted with the new adhesive before delivery.

The Cybertruck’s durability issues are a major concern, as it is the latest example of Tesla facing unexpected problems related to its products. The vehicle has already been plagued by delays, overpricing, and software and hardware recalls. Despite this, it still outsells rival pickups, but its struggles underscore the importance of rigorous testing across diverse environmental scenarios.

The recall affects all Cybertruck models built between November 2023 through February 2025 and is linked to an owner’s complaint about a loose cant rail on the roof. NHTSA warns that if the cant rail stainless steel panels separate from the vehicle while driving, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase their risk of injury or collision.
