Tesla’s robotaxi service, launched on June 22, has experienced a safety concern in Austin. The incident occurred on East Oltorf Street and was reported by Edward Niedermeyer, who also criticized the company’s self-driving technology in the past.
Niedermeyer shared a YouTube video that allegedly showed a Tesla vehicle braking hard twice for stationary police vehicles outside its driving path. However, Tesla and Niedermeyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The city of Austin’s autonomous vehicle incident dashboard tracks safety concerns, including collisions or near misses, involving self-driving companies like Waymo and Zoox. The dashboard has reported 120 incidents over the past two years and 45 in 2025.
Tesla’s robotaxi service includes a safety monitor who sits in the passenger seat and remote operators who can intervene when needed. Despite this, concerns remain about the company’s ability to ensure public safety.
