Tesla Rolls Out Robotaxi Service in Austin, Texas Trial Begins

Tesla has begun inviting a small group of people to test its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The trial could start as early as Sunday and will use about 10 Model Y SUVs equipped with the company’s Full Self-Driving software.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and will ride in vehicles where a Tesla employee sits in the front passenger seat during each ride. Riders can download Tesla’s Robotaxi app to call a ride and share their feedback on the experience.

The trial is crucial for Tesla as it shifts focus from electric cars to robotics and AI. CEO Elon Musk emphasizes safety, with humans monitoring the cars remotely. However, experts are concerned about Tesla’s approach relying solely on cameras and AI, which may not be suitable in conditions like fog or heavy rain.

Some lawmakers have asked Tesla to wait until new state rules for autonomous vehicles take effect in September. Self-driving services are expensive and risky, with companies facing federal investigations and recalls after accidents. The trial will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of Tesla’s robotaxi service.

Analysts rate Tesla stock a Hold, with an average price target of $286.14 per share, implying 11% downside risk.
