Tesla has introduced self-driving features to some of its vehicles in China as part of a software update. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, said the software was trained on internet videos of Chinese roads and signs. This rollout comes amid increased competition from rivals like Chinese automaker BYD.
Tesla’s self-driving technology is currently limited to driver-assist features, such as guiding vehicles through turns and lane changes. The company plans to gradually introduce more advanced features in its vehicles. However, Tesla owners in China must pay $8,800 for access to the self-driving software.
The move is part of Tesla’s pivot toward autonomous driving, which aims to redefine the EV giant as an “AI or robotics company.” Musk has stated that if investors view Tesla only as an auto company, it would be a “wrong framework” and limit the company’s potential. The rollout comes as BYD prepares to offer self-driving software to all its customers for free.
Tesla’s annual sales declined in January, marking the first time in over a decade. Musk had previously stated that unsupervised full-self-driving vehicles could be available in most countries by the end of next year, but regulatory issues may limit this goal.
