Tesla’s sales have continued to decline in Europe, with new figures showing a 49.5% drop in April compared to the same period last year. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association reports that Chinese competitor BYD has overtaken Tesla as the top-selling electric vehicle (EV) brand in Europe for the first time.
According to Jato Dynamics research firm, SAIC’s EV sales have surged by 54% in Europe, while Tesla’s sales in key markets such as the UK and Netherlands have plummeted by 62% and 74%, respectively. Sweden has also seen a significant decline of 81%.
Analysts attribute this decline to Elon Musk’s far-right ideals and intrusion into European politics, which have sparked an international anti-Tesla movement. Longtime Tesla bull Dan Ives warns that Musk’s actions have created “brand damage” for the company.
Tesla’s financial struggles are compounded by its aging model lineup and focus on developing an autonomous “robotaxi” ride-hailing service. Even the company’s own executives admit they are behind competitor Waymo in autonomous technology. The company plans to showcase a limited demo of its robotaxi service next month, but experts question whether it will be enough to turn around Tesla’s fortunes.
