Tesla’s sales in Europe and the UK have dropped by nearly half, with a 49% decline compared to last April, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. The drop is concerning, especially after Tesla recently launched its new Model Y vehicle, which typically attracts more consumers.
In contrast, competitors haven’t experienced the same decline. Analysts attribute this to CEO Elon Musk’s recent involvement in US politics and his alignment with President Donald Trump. This has led to a backlash against Musk and his company.
Tesla’s struggles are not unique to Europe and the UK. The company recorded its worst quarterly sales globally, with 336,681 deliveries, marking a decline from previous years. In April, new car registrations in EU countries fell by 0.3% year-over-year, while electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 27.8%.
Despite Musk’s efforts to refocus on Tesla, EVs still make up only a small share of the market. However, growth is evident, with EV sales increasing. Chinese manufacturers like BYD are gaining ground, despite EU tariffs.Registrations of EVs made by Chinese automakers rose by 59% year-on-year, reaching almost 15,300 units in April.
