Tesla To Remove 64 Superchargers from New Jersey Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has announced that it will remove 64 Tesla Supercharger stalls from the toll road, citing a decision to use a single third-party provider for electric vehicle charging. The move is part of a plan to transition service areas to Universal Open Access EV chargers, which will be provided by Applegreen Electric.

Tesla expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that it would limit access to reliable and cost-effective charging on the highway. The company had offered above-market terms to keep the Superchargers, including building additional stalls at New Jersey service plazas.

The removal of the Tesla Superchargers is seen as a setback for electric vehicle adoption in New Jersey, which aims to reach 100% zero-emission new car sales by 2035. The universal chargers will be available starting June 6 at select service areas, with additional locations expected to open later this year.

Tesla remains hopeful that the NJTA or Governor Phil Murphy might reconsider its decision and allow it to maintain a presence on the toll road.
