Tesla’s humanoid robot program has suffered a significant blow with the departure of Milan Kovac, who led the Optimus robotics team. Kovac cited family reasons for leaving, stating he needed to spend more time with his loved ones abroad. His exit comes as the company continues to develop and demonstrate its capabilities in various areas, including handling an egg, cooking meals, and folding laundry.
Tesla first announced Optimus in 2021, promising it could move at 5 mph, carry loads up to 45 pounds, and sell for $20,000 each when produced in volume. Elon Musk estimated the robot’s launch could boost the company’s market value to $25 trillion. However, production has been delayed due to China’s export restrictions on rare earth magnets, which may impact its release date.
Ashok Elluswamy will take over Kovac’s responsibilities, leading the Autopilot group forward. The departure marks a significant change for the Optimus program, but Tesla remains committed to revolutionizing transportation and household tasks with its cutting-edge robots.
