Houston Texans cornerback Kris Boyd was left to wonder if he’d make it through his first practice after getting into a heated scuffle with special teams coordinator Frank Ross just seconds into their divisional round game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The controversy began when Nikko Remigio’s 63-yard kickoff return allowed the Chiefs to gain an early advantage.
Boyd was quick to react, tackling Remigio and forcing a fumble that the Chiefs recovered before ultimately being tackled himself. However, in his haste, Boyd lost his composure, tossing his helmet as he exited the field and earning a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The incident didn’t go unnoticed by Ross, who Boyd shoved as he attempted to make his way to the sidelines. “I was just too excited,” Boyd explained in an interview with reporters after the game. “I did something I shouldn’t have done.” The cornerback apologized to everyone involved and later stated that he had “settled things” with Ross.
Despite the off-field drama, the Texans’ defense helped limit the damage by holding the Chiefs to a field goal following the kickoff return. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s early struggles, as they ultimately lost 23-14.
