The Houston Texans have hired 42-year-old Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator, bringing in a fresh perspective to the team’s struggling offense. Coach DeMeco Ryans believes Caley can help the team “get over the hump” and take them to new heights.
Ryans parted ways with former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after the Texans’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round, citing an underwhelming year that saw a decline in yards per game and points scored. Quarterback C.J. Stroud took 52 sacks, which was the second-most in the league, and was pressured on nearly 40% of his dropbacks.
Caley, who has never been an offensive coordinator before, comes to Houston after serving as pass game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2024 and tight ends coach for the New England Patriots from 2015-2022. He praised Stroud, saying he can “spin it” and is a natural thrower of the football.
The new offense will be based on Caley’s system, which focuses on game-plan flexibility and player-specific schemes. Caley emphasized that he wants to ask his players to do what they do well, while also finding ways to help them win.
Caley replaces Slowik, who was a close friend and mentor to Ryans during their time in San Francisco. Ryans expressed gratitude for the experience working with Slowik, but acknowledged that it’s time for change.
