The Houston Texans’ locker room on Christmas evening felt like a funeral, as the team’s dismal performance against the Baltimore Ravens was almost too depressing to bear. The final score of 31-2 is fitting, considering the Texans had their offense completely stifled.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud struggled in his worst game of the season, completing just 17 of 31 passes for 185 yards and an interception. He missed easy throws, including a back-and-forth play with wide receiver Nico Collins that could have resulted in big gains. The Texans’ lack of scoring was reminiscent of the Lovie Smith or David Culley eras, when points were hard to come by.
The running game was also non-existent, with Joe Mixon gaining only 26 yards on nine carries. The offense line continued to struggle with stunts, and the play-calling from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has been average at best.
The Texans’ defense fared no better, giving up 147 yards to Ravens running back Derrick Henry in the second quarter alone. Lamar Jackson took advantage of this, scoring three touchdowns on the day.
Coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged that his team is “too up-and-down” and needs to find a way to be consistent. The loss was a blowout, and it’s unclear if newly acquired receiver Diontae Johnson and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair can turn things around.
The Texans have one game left before the playoffs, but their performance on January 5 against the Titans could determine whether they’re headed for another early playoff exit.
