The Houston Texans made the surprise decision to waive wide receiver Diontae Johnson just three weeks after claiming him. Johnson played in only two games for the team, including Saturday’s AFC wild-card playoff win against the Chargers. He had a limited role on offense and was seen as an extra player on special teams.
Coach DeMeco Ryans stated that it didn’t work out with Johnson and he is now joining the Kansas City Chiefs. The move came after Johnson failed to gain on-field chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud, and he needed time to learn the playbook quickly.
Johnson had previously been cut by several teams in less than a year, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and most recently the Texans’ AFC wild-card playoff opponents. He will likely compete for two open spots on the roster, potentially joining wide receiver Jared Wayne or tight end Teagan Quitoriano.
