Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian is shaking up the offensive front, giving redshirt sophomore Connor Stroh his first career start against UTEP. Despite a unit that averages only 4 yards per carry, Stroh played almost the entire game and showed promise in his development.
Stroh’s growth is crucial for the No. 8 Longhorns, who rank ninth in the SEC in rushing yards per game (182.3) and yards per carry (4.38). Sarkisian wants to see cohesion on this unit, which has relied heavily on continuity and trust in its past starters.
Goosby, a left tackle, praises Stroh’s development, saying he’s “tightly up on his technique” and playing like a “huge monster.” With senior center Cole Hutson questionable against Sam Houston, the interior of the line may see another shakeup. Regardless, Sarkisian wants to see improvement, especially against Sam Houston’s smaller defensive front that will try to mimic UTEP’s slanting approach.
The challenge is to hit a moving target in the trenches, where everything happens fast. Stroh and his teammates must rise above their football IQ and play an unconventional style, finishing plays and finding success. With last week’s game providing valuable lessons, the Longhorns are poised for growth on offense.
