Texas Governor Signs Bill Aiming to Improve Food Safety and Health

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed Senate Bill 25, also known as the “Make Texas Healthy Again” bill, into law. The legislation aims to improve food safety and health by focusing on ultra-processed foods and their impact on human health.

The bill establishes a nutrition advisory committee at the Department of State Health Services with a focus on metabolic health, functional medicine, and chronic disease. The committee will examine the connection between ultra-processed foods and chronic diseases, analyze scientific studies on their effects, and provide education on their impact on human health.

The law also requires warning labels on 44 food additives, including several dyes and preservatives. Food manufacturers must ensure that each product sold in the state includes a warning label disclosing the use of these ingredients if they are required to be named on a food label by the US FDA. The labels must also include a statement indicating that certain ingredients are not recommended for human consumption in specific countries.

This new law is similar to the Trump Administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, which aimed to improve public health through dietary changes. By implementing these measures, Texas aims to promote healthier eating habits and reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases.
