Several new laws will take effect in Texas on January 1, 2025, including changes to vehicle safety inspections, data privacy, and government organization.
The state is eliminating mandatory vehicle safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles, instead requiring a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee at registration time. New vehicles from the two most recent model years will pay an initial fee of $16.75 for two years.
Additionally, Texans can now opt out of personal data collection through internet browser settings and extensions, or by using global device settings or links to websites. The Texas Data Privacy and Security Act gives residents the right to know if a company is collecting their data, correct the data collected, and opt out of targeted advertising and sales.
Other new laws include changes to government organizations, such as establishing new judicial districts, revising the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, and allowing school districts to request more state funding. These changes aim to improve transparency, data protection, and public education.
