Texas Longhorns Clinch Spot in College Football Playoffs with No. 5 Seed

The Texas Longhorns secured a spot in the College Football Playoff despite losing to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, earning them the No. 5 seed and a first-round matchup against Clemson. The 21-19 overtime loss dropped the Longhorns out of four spots reserved for conference champions but afforded them a bye.

The team’s appearance marks the second consecutive season they’ve made it into the playoffs, with last year’s trip ending in a Sugar Bowl loss to Washington. With the format expanded to 12 teams, Texas was able to survive their SEC title game defeat and make the field.

Clemson secured a playoff spot after winning the ACC Championship game on a 56-yard field goal. The Tigers’ season record is 10-3, with notable losses to Georgia, Louisville, and South Carolina. A Longhorns victory will set up another home game against Arizona State in the quarterfinals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
