Texas Measles Cases Rise Amid Outbreak Concerns

Measles cases have surged in McLenan County, Texas, with eight reported cases so far. While vaccination is the best protection against measles, not everyone should receive the vaccine due to certain health conditions.

According to Dr. William Glomb of Waco Family Medicine, who has treated over 40 years of children and experienced five measles outbreaks nationwide, unvaccinated individuals face the highest risk during outbreaks. The doctor advises that people with severe allergies, immunocompromised conditions, pregnancy, or a history of vaccine reactions should not receive the measles vaccine.

However, healthcare providers can offer alternative protection methods, such as vitamin A and standard infection control practices, for those who cannot be vaccinated. Health officials stress that McLenan County is not experiencing an outbreak, as all cases have been contained and there has been no further exposure to others.

The measles vaccine is available at the Waco-McLennan County Health District’s clinic without an appointment. For more information or to reach Waco Family Medicine’s pediatric hotline, call (254) 313-KIDS (5437).
