Measles cases continue to rise in Texas, with two new cases linked to the ongoing outbreak in West Texas. The latest cases were reported in El Paso and Midland counties. As of Tuesday, the total number of measles outbreak-linked cases in Texas since January stands at 744.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), there have been 94 hospitalizations due to measles since the outbreak began. Dr. Jennifer Shuford, commissioner of DSHS, warned that with outbreaks across the country and globally, a resurgence in Texas is possible if unvaccinated individuals are introduced into under-vaccinated communities.
In addition to the reported cases, there have been at least 33 cases linked to the outbreak that health officials have not yet connected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidance for international travelers to ensure they are fully vaccinated against measles before flying, citing a high risk of transmission on planes.
