The number of measles cases in Texas has risen to 663, with the majority centered in Gaines County, according to the state’s health department. This increase is attributed to an outbreak that began in the United States, where measles was declared eradicated a quarter century ago.
Researchers warn that the US is at a critical point for another widespread measles outbreak. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 396 cases in Gaines County, with 87 patients hospitalized due to complications from the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection. However, some experts fear that a lack of strong advocacy from government health officials and misleading information on unproven treatments may hinder efforts to combat the outbreak.
The situation remains concerning, with no indication that the spread of measles is slowing down. New Mexico’s health department reported 66 cases in Lea County, which shares a border with Gaines County in Texas. Experts emphasize the need for clear guidance from government officials and a unified approach to vaccination efforts.
