Texas Measles Outbreak: Stay Vaccinated, Say Health Officials

A recent outbreak of measles in Texas has sparked concerns across the US. The Alabama Department of Public Health is urging parents to ensure their children are up-to-date with their vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that unvaccinated individuals have a 90% chance of becoming infected if exposed to the virus.

Measles, a serious viral respiratory illness, spreads through droplets in the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Symptoms typically appear within 7-14 days after exposure and can be severe, leading to complications like ear infections, pneumonia, or encephalitis.

Health officials emphasize that getting vaccinated is much safer than contracting measles. The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is usually administered at two ages: 12-15 months and 4-6 years. Parents can help manage symptoms by ensuring their child gets plenty of rest and fluids.

If you suspect your child has measles or has been exposed to the virus, consult with your doctor immediately, especially if they are immunocompromised or have not received two doses of the measles vaccine.
