A mosque in Plano, Texas, has become the focal point of controversy over its plans to develop an entire city for Muslims outside of Dallas. The East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) already boasts a thriving community with hundreds of followers, featuring expensive homes, a shopping center, and a clinic.
However, a new project called EPIC City, which would include 1,000 homes, green spaces, and schools, has sparked heated opposition from locals who fear it will lead to the erosion of their way of life. Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to stop the development, claiming that EPIC is breaking the law and practicing Sharia law.
Despite these concerns, community members argue that they are being unfairly targeted due to misconceptions about Islam. Fatmeh Zeidan, a 19-year-old student, notes that anyone can live in the surrounding neighborhood, which she finds convenient. Alia Hayat, an elderly woman who moved from Houston to Plano for its proximity to EPIC, shares her own positive experiences with the mosque and its community.
The proposed development has also raised concerns about noise pollution and water restrictions in the nearby town of Josephine, where EPIC City is planned. Residents are worried that the project’s loudspeaker system would disrupt their quiet lives and further strain the town’s already strained water resources.
As tensions rise, it remains to be seen whether the EPIC project will move forward or be shut down due to opposition from local residents.
