Thai Hostages Return Home After 15 Months of Captivity in Gaza

Five Thai laborers who were taken hostage by Hamas during the Israel-Palestine conflict have returned home after 15 months of captivity in Gaza. The hostages, including a young couple with three children, reunited with their families at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday morning.

The five hostages, who are among the estimated 30,000 Thai agricultural workers working in Israel, were kidnapped along with hundreds of others on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched attacks on Israel. At least 39 Thais were killed and over 30 were taken hostage during the conflict.

The family reunions at the airport were emotional and joyful, with many of the hostages describing their experiences as “indescribable” and “transformative.” Despite being subjected to harsh conditions in captivity, including a diet of bland food and limited sunlight, most of the hostages reported feeling grateful to be alive.

One of the hostages, Mr. Vilas Thanna, said his son’s survival was a miracle and that he felt like he had been reborn. Another hostage, Ms. Nukan Suwannakham, marveled at how her son had regained his health despite being in captivity for so long.

The return of the five Thai hostages marks a significant step forward for the community of Thai laborers who were affected by the conflict. Many have chosen to continue working in Israel due to the higher salaries, but others, like Ms. Anong Saethao, say they will never allow their loved ones to work abroad again due to the risks involved.

The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of migrant workers and the need for greater protection and support for those affected by conflict and terrorism.
