Thai PM’s $400mn Assets Exposed Amid Anti-Corruption Scrutiny

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has declared assets worth over $400 million, including luxury goods and investments. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) received her asset declaration, which includes designer handbags valued at $2 million and 75 luxury watches priced around $5 million.

According to the NACC document, Paetongtarn’s net worth is approximately $258 million after deducting liabilities of nearly five billion baht. The list of assets includes properties in London and Japan, investments worth 11 billion baht, and another billion baht in deposits and cash.

The Prime Minister is the youngest daughter of telecom billionaire and ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who has a net worth of $2.1 billion. Her family’s influence in Thai politics remains significant despite her father’s ouster and exile during a coup.

Experts argue that money plays a crucial role in Thai politics, particularly in a country with limited democratic institutions. The NACC document reveals assets of over $400 million from previous Prime Ministers, including Srettha Thavisin, who had declared assets worth 985 million baht before stepping down by the constitutional court in August.
